EC360 Field Trip @ The Note Printing Works, Bank of Thailand

By Praewsupang Kaewsuksai, BBA#16

It has been a long-awaited journey for students of EC360 Introductory Thai Economy class, a field trip to one of the most secured places in the Kingdom of Thailand. With the endeavor of our professor, Dr.Chatsurang Karnchanasai, and the courtesy of Bank of Thailand, we got an opportunity to visit the Note Printing Works.

In the early morning of March 14, 2011, the crowd gathered around campus for a short bus trip to the organization that was told to create and store the money for the whole nation. Located at the outskirt of Bangkok, the Note Printing Works? colossal facilities and security control brought us a sense of excitement since the moment we arrived.

Through out the day, we were able to experience all of the processes from Banknote Design, Plate-making, Printing, to Inspection and Packaging. Our energetic guide demonstrated how to access the vault, so called Strong Room, which is the main storage of all notes and our national gold reserves. The process captivated the whole crowd and brought a sense of merriment after we realized it was not real. Exhibition and videos also showed the importance of printing our own currency and how the Note Printing Works has evolved from the reign of King Rama the 5th. We were taught how to separate real notes from the counterfeit ones and all common scams used by criminals.

This eventful trip would not be successful without our beloved lecturer and a support from Thammasat Business School and BBA staffs. Thank you for arranging the activity so bench-marking that we really appreciate being students in this program.
